MHA to Host Talk on Last Sail-Powered Whaling Ship in the World

On June 5, 2013, Maritime Heritage Alliance will welcome Matthew Stackpole, who will speak on the past, present, and future of the Charles W. Morgan, the oldest U.S. commercial sailing ship and the last sail-driven whaling ship in the world.

The Charles W. Morgan was built in 1841 in New Bedford, MA and has been in Mystic Seaport, CT since 1941, following an 80-year whaling career. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966.

Matthew Stackpole, a Nantucket native, is the whaling ship’s historian for the massive restoration project
that will culminate in the re-launching of the vessel at Mystic Seaport on July 21, 2013. An accomplished
sailor, Stackpole spent time as a rigger, a first mate on the schooner Shenandoah, and a charter schooner
owner and captain of the Concordia-built schooner Mya. He is a former Executive Director of the Martha’s
Vineyard Museum.

Maritime Heritage Alliance is proud to be part of the collaborative efforts to restore the historic vessel to
seaworthy condition. MHA’s volunteer shipwrights are constructing the spars that will be installed on a
whaleboat that is being built at the Great Lakes Boat Building School in Cedarville, MI. Oars for the boat
are being constructed by the Michigan Maritime Museum Traditional Small Craft Association in South
Haven, MI.

Sailors and history buffs alike will enjoy Stackpole’s presentation, which will include a slide presentation
detailing the Charles W. Morgan restoration project.

A reception for Matthew Stackpole and his wife, Martha, will immediately follow the presentation, and
refreshments of a seafaring nature will be served. Tours of the Maritime Heritage Alliance facilities at the
Great Lakes Discovery Campus, 13268 West Bayshore Drive, Traverse City and MHA boats, including the schooner Madeline, will be available.

Reservations are required, due to limited seating. Please call the Maritime Heritage Alliance at 231-946-
2647 to reserve your seat or email info@maritimeheritagealliance.org. A donation of $10 at the door is
suggested. For further information contact Frank Clements at frankclements007@yahoo.com

Movie "Hide Away" Features Grand Traverse Bay Setting

SPECIAL ADVANCE SCREENING

"Hide Away" (formerly titled "A Year in Mooring")

Thursday, May 24 at 6:30 pm

Tickets $25 to Benefit the Maritime Heritage Alliance

Finally! It's time to see "Hide Away" (formerly titled "A Year in Mooring") on the State's big screen. Shot in Bowers Harbor, with the climactic scene shot right on Front Street, this winner of the 2012 SXSW Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for Cinematography captures the rhythms and beauty of our area and was filmed with the support of our neighbors. The producers have generously arranged for this special advance screening to benefit the Maritime Heritage Alliance on Thursday, May 24 at 6:30 pm.

This filmed-Up-North movie from noted Native American director Chris Eyre ("Smoke Signals") stars Josh Lucas ("The Lincoln Lawyer," "Sweet Home Alabama") in his first dramatic leading role. The story focuses on a troubled man attempting to rebuild his life by restoring a boat in an idyllic harbor in northern Michigan, watched by three harbor residents: a waitress (acclaimed Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer, "Angels & Demons," "Munich"), a veteran mariner (James Cromwell, "The Artist," "Babe"), and a newly single father (Jon Tenney, TV’s "The Closer").

The sailing cutter Hesperus (played by Traverse City's "Champion") in the film was provided by MHA, and proceeds from the benefit will go to support the at-risk youth program SAIL Champion, community programs on Welcome and Madeline, and to promote Great Lakes Maritime History.

General admission tickets are $25. Tickets go on sale at 12 noon on Friday, May 18 online, at the State Theatre box office, and by phone at 231-947-3446. Doors open at 6 pm, and afterwards producer Sally Jo Effenson, along with Rod Jones and Jed Mooney, who worked on the film, will take questions from the audience.

The film opens nationwide on May 25. It is Rated PG-13, and is 83 minutes.

Inland Seas at Strictly Sail Chicago

If you are a sailor and in Chicago this weekend, check out Stictly Sail Chicago at Navy Pier. ISEA is sharing a booth with Maritime Heritage Alliance, thanks to our mutual friend Rorke Miller.  We could not send any ISEA staff, but our display and literature, including the summer sailing schedule, will be there.  --T.
