Splash! August 29, 2008, 1105 hrs.

Freshly painted and ready for launch.

Inland Seas was gently lowered into Lake Michigan by the skillful crew at Northport Bay Boatyard. She sure looked great with new bottom & topsides paint, and shiny rub rails. We had a pleasent motor back to Suttons Bay in flat calm conditions. Thanks to all who helped with the yard work: Remy Champt, Bob Hagerman, Jan Hale, Fred Utting, Jeanie Inglehart, Ben Shaw, Kathy Utting, and the crew at NBBY.

Below: Jan cleans up the brush (used to paint under the jackstand pads) while Kathy, Jeanie, Remy and our surveyor Marc Nugent look on.

Ahhh. That feels good.

This week Inland Seas is "on the hard" at Northport Bay Boatyard. We are painting the bottom and topsides, and servicing the feathering propeller. We also had our drydock hull inspection by the U. S. Coast Guard (we passed with no problems), and we are having Marc Nugent of Manitiou Marine Services do a Condition and Value Survey as part of our long term care of the vessel. We plan to launch on Friday morning and return to Suttons Bay in time for the Family Science Sail on Saturday (we have room available, so call the office if you want to sail with us).

Invasive Species Field Course For Teachers - July 28 - 30

Gary with ROV

This three-day course took 25 teachers from the Great Lakes region (and beyond) through the lastest information on invasive species problems in the Lakes. The course was a combination of presentations by experts in the field and field work in wetland, shore and open water habitats. Groups of teachers completed a research project aboard the schooner Inland Seas. Special thanks to Gary Longton and DTE Energy for the use of their new ROV. This course is a joint project of ISEA and the NMC Great Lakes Water Studies Institute, with funding by the US EPA and the Oleson Foundation.
